Is it really Safe to Travel in Mexico?

For over 25 years, we have traveled by plane, train, automobile, public bus, taxi and in our personal vehicle.  We have traveled to large cities and small towns, we have camped in town squares, stayed in quaint hotels and huge condo resorts.  We have traveled with our children, in large groups and by ourselves.  We always try to use common sense and good judgment and we have never had any serious problems.

Is it really Safe to Live in Mexico?

We have only lived in Puerto Penasco.  We definitely are not experts on the subject.  Yet we meet people from the United States and from Canada who have lived in my places in Mexico.  Most all of them enjoy it and will say that they feel as safe as they ever did in the states or wherever home was previously.  Very few have had any serious negative problems. Most crimes that we have heard about are “petty theft” - what we call crimes of convenience… if you leave a house abandoned for long periods of time or leave a vehicle in a dark corner of town, you may quite likely have a break-in.  Our house in in town and away from the tourist areas and we have friendly neighbors who look out for us and who also want their neighborhood to be a safe place for their families!

Answers to the most COMMON QUESTIONS that we hear from our friends, family & others about Travel & Life in Mexico.

These answers may not be 100% politically correct or even universally correct!   …But here are our answers:

Why did you move to Mexico (and what do you like about living there)?

After traveling extensively in the country for business and for pleasure, Russ has really just come to love the culture, the music, the people, the food and all things Mexican!  On the other hand, Naomi just wanted to live by the sea in a warm place.  We both wanted to slow down from the crazed, fast-paced materialistic life that is so common in the states.  This wasn’t the first time we made a move to try and slow the pace of our life… years ago we moved to Ajo, Arizona and that was like living on the edge of the world! That was a much quieter life. In Mexico, we feel at home….and sometimes it’s almost like a step back in time.

What is the most frustrating part of living in Mexico?

Learning a new language as adults is difficult. Banking and business procedures can seem overly complicated and sometimes out-dated. Most of the local neighborhoods have dirt roads and that is tough on vehicles.  And, the dust in the house can be irritating. Sometimes we get a little overwhelmed about trash & litter which seems to be acceptable in the neighborhoods.

Is it really cheap to live in Mexico?

It all depends on how you choose to live and where you choose to live. Here in Puerto Penasco, the cost of living and the cost of property & homes is very high compared to most of Mexico.  However, for us the proximity to the states is a necessity for business and family.   Most basic needs are reasonable and easily found.  It is really all about our choices….just like anywhere else.  But, life can be Simple in Mexico.

And when we talk about moving...people always ask “Why?”

And the answer that Russ gives is still the same as it was when we lived in Ajo...

“We didn’t move to Why...that’s up there somewhere around Lukeville!”
